Larimar was first reported in the early 1900's by a priest in the Dominican Republic, but no one followed up on his reports. It was officially discovered in 1974 by Miguel Mendez and Norman Rilling on the beaches of the Dominican Republic. The stone was named for Miguel's daughter Larissa and the Spanish word "mar" meaning "the sea". Larimar is a quite rare gemstone and is spread over only 1 sq. kilometer.
